Which has a greater public health risk: tanning or abortion?
Oregon Right to Life’s Life Lobby Update is reporting on SB 340, which would ban tanning for teens under 14. Amendments have been proposed that would expand the ban to those under 18. Right to Life is pointing out the similarities between this bill, and parental notification before teen abortion.
There is already a law that requires parental consent for anyone under the age of 18 to use a tanning bed. The motivation behind the ban is concern for the safety of teens that use tanning beds, because of the health risk of repeated use. What is troubling about this bill is that it is supported by those who strongly opposed Measure 43. Apparently some Senators are concerned about teen health when it comes to tanning but not when it comes to abortion. It seems that their objection to parental notification was purely political and not because of their concern for teen health.
I don’t have a problem with parental consent for tanning, and there are probably good health reasons to ban it for those under 18. But, aren’t the risks of tanning lower than those of surgery? Why is abortion the exception?

I’m still angry at Oregon voters who defeated Measure 43.
Well, what happened was that the opposition put scary lies out through the media just before the election. I have worked hard twice for a ballot measure to stop state tax funding of abortions, only to see it go down each time. I have twice worked hard for a parental notification measure, only to see it go down each time.
All that the opposition has to do is trumpet through the media (just before election) that “If this measure passes, women and girls will die!” I’m so disgusted with Oregon politics, I will never again lift a finger for anything political in this state. Yes, I will support Pregnancy Resource Centers and all the prolife educational efforts. But the political side is as yet futile. I know: not enough hearts have been reached, and we must not give up on that. Well, I raised a daughter, and she now has two daughters ages 13 and 11. The 13-year-old has a blood condition which might put her at risk if she were whisked away without her mother’s knowledge to a perfect stranger for an abortion. So you see why I’m angry and upset. Too many people did not vote to protect our teen daughters.
Try to see the movie “Amazing Grace.” I can’t wait. There are lots of parallels between Wilberforce and the American prolife movement. I hope it lifts our spirits.
This Bill should be vetoed there is health risks to

Angie, I would encourage you to not give up on Oregon politics. Wilberforce suffered defeat after defeat, but never gave up. It took 20 years to abolish the slave trade, and 25 more before slaves were emancipated. The battle to end abortion is long, but it is worth fighting.
Don’t forget editor and Angie that it was the conservatives of the time (using the Biblical approval of slavery!) who kept the slave trade going. Those who wanted to stop it were branded as the progressives and liberals of their day. Later conservatives were pro-Jim Crow and “separate but equal” and against programs to give minorities a hand up. Even as recently as 30 years ago, the conservative movement wanted to ban mixed-race marriage, which is just as silly then as banning gay marriage is today (and the same reasons were given!!).
But back to the issue. I wonder how many of us actually give our time and money to help those children who weren’t aborted?? How many of you donate your time to Big Brother/Big Sister?? Have adopted an older child who has no home?? Maybe a child with special needs or emotional troubles? Voted for more of your tax money to go to social programs to help the least fortunate… those who most often get abortions?? Have personally put a child of lesser means through college??
Ever wonder why every county has a children’s home with so many concerned conservatives around? Are we flapping our gums, or do we really care about the kids?
OMG!!! You actually have a system that auto-edits responses with the word g a y in it! Wow!! If you can’t talk about it, how do you hope to have intelligent debate? I guess you don’t!!
Steven, we just fixed that. Sorry. We do filter out a number of words that might be offensive to certain people, although the list we use was put together by another source and included words that actually should be part of public dialogue. So now feel free to say “gay” as often as you’d like.
Thanks ‘administrator’! I appreciate the cheap shot from the person who is, or should be from his title, the ‘moderator’. And did you just blame the problem on outsourcing???
However, I didn’t see any response to my comment that too many of us are giving lip service to the abortion issue. Why aren’t those who are really against abortions doing anything to help the less fortunate children of our state?? Why are those who are against abortions also against adopting older special-needs children, sexual education, and birth control? Why does America have the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the industrial WORLD??
Obviously something conservatives are doing isn’t working. How about returning to some core values? You know, less government in our personal lives, less regulations, less rules about what we can and cannot do with our own bodies? Until you financially and physically support some of the unwanted children who were born instead of aborted, please listen to those of us who do.
