Sisters teacher fired for Biblical reference

The Big Bang Theory has new meaning: mention the Bible in biology class, and—BANG!—you’re out of a job. Religious intolerance has reached a fever pitch.

Kris Helphinstine, a high school biology teacher in Sisters, was fired last night for deviating from the established curriculum on evolution by “including biblical references in material he provided students.”

When asked about the incident by the Bend Bulletin, Helphinstine said, “Critical thinking is vital to scientific inquiry… my whole purpose was to give accurate information and to get them thinking.”

    Intolerance In Sisters?…

Reading the item on Oregon Crossroads, you might think all the teacher did was make vague and passing reference to the Bible. But when you read the linked article, you discover that he also “gave a PowerPoint presentation that made links between evolu…

Of all the things teachers are being prosecuted for and accused of, mentioning the Bible in class SHOULD NOT be listed as a CRIMINAL OFFENCE TO STUDENTS!! Remember the principals our country was founded on!! Remember what the constitution says about freedom of religion!! Our founding fathers were FOR teaching about the Bible in schools and this provided for them a foundation for living which was POSITIVE!! I believe students could benefit from learning from the Bible in school. Where else are they going to be taught rules of conduct. I believe the LACK of teaching from the Bible in school has caused a BIG gap in the way kids act in and out of school today. It has led to anarchism, violence, hate and disrespect for teachers and other adults in schools. There is NO ACCOUNTABILITY in schools today, let alone in homes. Teachers have NO LEVERS for discipline in schools, which is why kids are given to extreme behaviors and violence. They have NO STANDARD by which to live and act in schools anymore. This has been greatly enhanced by the EVIL INFLUENCE of the ACLU in schools. They are out to destroy everything good that could be taught in our schools. This is the United States of America, a CHRISTIAN NATION!! Why shouldn’t kids be taught about the Bible in our schools!! We are NOT an atheistic, or Muslim nation, THEREFORE, the United States of America should not be required to tolerate any other religion than Christianity. Our nation was founded on this principal and should stay founded on this very principal. If individuals do not like it, they should move to another country that better suits their beliefs.

According to all reports, the teacher was not fired for mentioning the Bible.

That is, I certainly can’t speak for the Sisters School Board but every news article I’ve seen about this indicates that he was fired for deviating from the curriculum in teaching things which are untrue and frankly paranoid. The actual class materials are most likely unavailable for inspection, so that’s really all anyone has to go on.
